Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you not read what David did when he and those [who were] with him were hungry?” Luke 6:3 NABRE
Since the time of the Law of Moses there has been a special bread made and placed on the altar as an offering for God. It is God’s instruction calling for the special bread, placed each Sabbath or feast and the old bread consumed by consecrated men, priests from the tribe of Aaron. It is sacred, holy bread. There was a time when David was fleeing from King Saul, who wanted him dead, and visited the priest of the altar asking for this bread, it would be used to fill his and his retinue’s hunger. David was questioned about his ritual worthiness but given the bread. Though David was not a priest, he was the anointed of God and would become King, ancestor to the Messiah. David has an integral role in the plan of God for the salvation of humanity and is a key figure in the story of the Hebrew people. All since the time of David’s Kingship until today know David and his favor with God. Though David was not following the law strictly, his actions are not condemned because he put the safety of the people above ritual execution.
Many years later Jesus’ disciples are accused of sinning on the Sabbath by pulling grain to satisfy their hunger. To harvest on the Sabbath was seen as breaking the Law. Jesus responds with David’s action when hungry and declares tending to human needs takes precedence over Sabbath regulations. But Jesus also makes the link between David and His role in the salvation of the people. He wants to be recognized as one bringing a new message of purity for God, love those God loves. Feeding those hungry is a big step in the direction of Jesus message of putting others first.
Do you place church rules above the needs of others? Are you willing to break cultural norms to serve others?
