And in his name the Gentiles will hope. Matthew 12:21 NABRE
Jesus learns of the religious leaders plan to destroy Him and so He withdraws. Jesus still has much to accomplish and will remain more low key as to not draw undo attention which will lead to a premature end to His mission. Matthew in his gospel does not see this as a set back but rather as a part of God’s plan. To demonstrate this, Matthew quotes from the prophet Isaiah (42:1-4) which declares the journey of a servant that suffers and doing so as a light to others. The prophecy points to Israel as the light to others and a suffering servant for the good of others. Matthew sees the same prophecy applying to Jesus, one who lives as a light for others and the world but will also suffer to bring good. The message will extend beyond the intended community of Israel and include all people from every part of the world.
Israel has always been the community chosen by God to be an example for others. Today Jews still carry this mission. Matthew provides a view for Christians that portrays individuals as examples for other non-Jews, we are meant to be lights and servants for others. Christians are to live as an imitation of Jesus and in that manner become servants who expect to be in the light so by their lives others see Jesus.
Are you the light to others? Who do you serve?
