Enter, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us. For he is our God, we are the people he shepherds, the sheep in his hands. Psalms 95:6-7 NABRE
Psalm ninety-five is possibly the most proclaimed psalm today of all the psalms. It is used in what is referred to as the Christian “office.” The official prayer of the church (at least in ritual Christian churches.) It is a psalm that proclaims God as Lord and invites us to listen to His voice. We are invited to praise God, the Lord of heaven and earth, we are invited to worship Him because He is God of all the people, we must not let anything lead us away from Him. Christians praying this prayer are conscious of being members of the new people of God. We acknowledge greatness of God the Maker and Christ’s Lordship over the church which means we are ready to listen to Christ’s voice. In the quoted verse we see this message expressed, bow in worship to God our Maker, He is our God, our Shepherd and we are sheep in His hands. Many would say being called sheep is not a compliment. Sheep are timid animals, easily spooked and insecure. But they do feel secure when they have the Shepherd in their sight. The Shepherd is an image of strength, peace, and courage. It is no mistake that we read of being sheep and God as our Shepherd, it is through God that we have everything we need, including the love that cannot come from anyone but God, our Maker, our loving Creator.
You are the beloved of God. Life has hardship and suffering, but God the Good Shepherd leads you away from trouble and into peace. You can count on God to provide all you need. It requires trust and faith, but like sheep seeing the Shepherd standing there ready to provide, we must keep our eyes focused on the Lord of Lords.
Do you focus on the Good Shepherd? How do you show your trust and faith?
