For the LORD’s word is upright; all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right. The earth is full of the mercy of the LORD. Psalms 33:4-5 NABRE
Psalm thirty-three is a psalm of praise to God. Praising God as Creator and praising all of creation available to us. God has created a world that is predictable and steady, a place on which we all depend. God continues to control the world in two ways; 1) through the laws of nature which are pre-ordained and unchanging; 2) through His personal supervision and intervention. God’s personal supervision is changing constantly because it depends on the actions of humanity. The laws of nature act to conceal God’s true supervision. If we only see the laws of nature we think the world is arbitrary, inconsistent, without justice or mercy. The challenge of humanity is to see beyond the laws of nature to penetrate and see the internal order dictated with precision by the Almighty. All who see the revelation of the Almighty will be elevated, the bad becoming good and the good becoming better. In the quoted verses attention is focused on the Creator Himself. We see God as upright, and all He has done is trustworthy. Then we learn God loves justice and right (a type of charity) and that the world is full of God’s mercy. Since God is upright and trustworthy, all that He decrees the righteous rejoice over, for better or worse. Sometimes God exercises justice, other times what is right, sometimes mercy.
These three traits; justice, mercy and rightness, God uses in combination. God cites these three traits so we know God does these things, proclaiming them, that we see them and have the opportunity to imitate God. God lives in such a way that we can see and we can become like God.
Do you see through the laws of nature to recognize God supervising? Do you act with justice, mercy and right?
Since God is upright and trustworthy, all that He decrees the righteous rejoice over, for better or worse. Sometimes God exercises justice, other times what is right, sometimes mercy.
