Mark 1:15 – February 6, 2020

“This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:15 NABRE

John the Baptist is arrested after Jesus’ Baptism and Jesus enters Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God, the good news, it is a message of salvation that is from God and about God. The quoted verse from Mark is Jesus proclaiming the beginning. It sums up the core of God’s message. The time of fulfillment is the time when God breaks into history to fulfill His promise and bring His plan to completion. It is a decisive moment in history, fixed and determined long ago by God. It is a time initiated years before when God selected Abraham to be the Father of a great nation. In this time God enters into humanity in the form of Jesus Christ, full human and God, bringing the message of salvation in word and deed.  Jesus often uses the theme, “kingdom of God,” a term to signify what He is all about. It is a term that sums up Israel’s yearning for the full manifestation of God’s authority in Israel and in the whole world. Jesus announcing the kingdom is at hand is a present and future message. The kingdom of God is present in the form of Jesus’ own person. In God’s kingdom there is no sin, Satan, death or disease and as Jesus goes around proclaiming the kingdom He eliminates each of these through healing, preaching and presence. On the other hand the kingdom of God is a future embodiment, Jesus is sowing seeds and the kingdom will grow until it fully consumes everything and everyone. It is a kingdom growing by small waves, bringing us and future generations into the kingdom.

At the kingdoms arrival we must repent, turn away from a life of sinfulness and selfishness, believing in the message of Jesus. To be in the kingdom of God we must be for others first, ourselves last.

Do you accept the gospel? Have you entered the kingdom of God?
