For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. John 3:16 NABRE
We read today one of the most quoted lines from the writings of John about Jesus. It is a line that can be remembered just by naming the chapter and verse number. It is a verse you may see on car stickers, coffee mugs, tee shirts, and years ago there was a good chance you could see it when the cameras panned the audience at a National Football League game. But do we really understand what it means for us? This eternal life seems to be a difficult concept to grasp, we see our friends, family, strangers die, and we know some of them were believers. I recently heard a preacher describing death as a door, an entry into a different place. A place we believe is better than here, without pain or suffering, without poverty or hunger, and without death. The story of Easter is the story of God’s Son Jesus rising from the tomb they placed him in after His crucifixion. He is the first to be raised from the dead, He is blazing the path of the new covenant. Those who believe in Jesus, showing this belief through action, will also not die, they will go through the door and live eternally.
If that is you, then live now as if your life is eternal. The prime action demonstrating belief is love those who God loves. Disciples are free to do as they wish, but true disciples will use their freedom to serve others, to walk humbly and make others more significant than themselves. Love is putting others first. Followers are selfless, other minded and putting themselves last so others may be lifted up. This is how Jesus lived. It is how we should live in our belief. Living this way, God is glorified.
Do you believe in eternal life? Do you live now as if your life will never end?
