Blessed are those who trust in the LORD; the LORD will be their trust. Jeremiah 17:7 NABRE
Jeremiah is a prophet of the Lord who lives in a key period in the Hebrew history. He sees many of the major events that defined the end of Jerusalem and deportation of the people to the Babylonian Kingdom. This defeat to the Babylonian’s is seen as justice from God for being an unfaithful people. Most of Jeremiah’s prophecy centers on the theme of repent and return to the Lord. In fact the section of Jeremiah with the quoted verse addresses this trust in the Lord. The people and leaders of the Kingdom tend to trust in their own decisions to align with political allies and depend on people rather than depending on the power of God. Jeremiah uses an example of a desert bush compared to a fruitful tree by the water. Unbelievers turn to the parched wasteland while faithful believers live a fruitful rich life. Those who trust in the Lord are the fruitful tree planted by the water, they will never distress, their roots can always reach out to the source of life. God indicates it is the heart that can be deceitful or trusting. Since God knows the heart, God knows us and knows how to reward each of us. If we want to be rich in God we must be close to the Word and form our own hearts in a way that we know God and His fruitfulness. Staying close to God forms our heart in such a way that we trust the Lord and the Lord is our trust.
Knowing God’s Word is a way of knowing God and forming ourselves to live the fruitful life God wants for us. Remaining in the Word of God forms our heart so that God’s knowing look into our heart provides a view of us that is trusting of God and a believer in God’s plan for our life.
Do you spend daily time in God’s Word? Are you growing toward the water of God or the wasteland of the desert?
