1 Corinthians 2:9 – January 23, 2019

But as it is written: “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him,” 1 Corinthians 2:9 NABRE

Paul is this section of the letter to the community in Corinth is speaking about a mystery that is not truly understood with worldly wisdom. The teachings of the gospel is more profound than can be initially understood, that in fact to be completely understood, to become mature in the teaching of the gospels, divine wisdom is required. This wisdom is foreign to this world, to those who caused the death of Jesus on the cross without realizing what it was they were doing. God has a plan for salvation which extends to all creation, which we can never fully grasp, just as we will never totally understand God. #richardrohr once said I wouldn’t follow a God that my mind could completely understand. There is so much more mystery in God than has been revealed. Wisdom can only be attained by means of revelation, which begins in Christ and we may only fully grasp when we reach heaven. God’s gifts are so blessed, so marvelous; a life that knows no death, shines in righteousness, has true freedom, trusting faith and holiness of chastity. There is so much we have not seen or heard, so we cannot understand. Our heart, is the true understanding organ of the spiritual life, if it is open to the Spirit and leads us with great hunger to the things that God has prepared, we have a chance, but without the Spirit’s help we won’t understand.

Completely understanding the mystery of God is not attainable, but we should always keep our heart open to the Spirit so we may grow in maturity and understanding, remaining in prayer so all is known.

Do you realize how little you know about God’s plan for us? Do you think those who crucified Jesus had an idea what they were part of?
