My soul yearns for you at night, yes, my spirit within me seeks you at dawn; When your judgment comes upon the earth, the world’s inhabitants learn justice. Isaiah 26:9 NABRE
In this section of Isaiah the prophet is speaking about a vision of the end of the world. The Lord will pass an end to the whole world, an event marking the “day of the Lord,” a day of great catastrophe. The righteous will be rewarded with a messianic banquet that marks their victory, even those scattered throughout the nations. Following this vision Isaiah speaks personally to God in a prayer. The greatness of God is being addressed directly from the prophet; he tells God he trust Him, expressing his inner most feelings, asking God to reveal his righteousness and intervene to bring peace, Isaiah will celebrate an enduring faithfulness to God. It is a beautiful trusting prayer that asks God to not end things but save those who are good. Coming from Isaiah who knows God, it is hopeful in recognizing the possibility of resurrection, that there will be life after all. The quoted verse demonstrates Isaiah’s personal commitment to the Lord. He yearns for God at night, his soul seeking God, every fiber he has is for God. When God’s judgement comes all will learn justice, Isaiah knows God is just. Hoping those who hear Isaiah’s prayer will know of its sincerity and his hope the unworthy will change while the righteous are thankful.
We can try to imagine a warning about the end of the world where God will come in judgement. Think about how you might react. Do you keep doing what you are doing or do you change to be judged more positively? If you think you should change, than do it now. This prediction has been predicted and can come true at any time. We do not know the hour.
Are you ready for judgment? Can you withstand a just judgment?
