Paul begins to speak to the community about his role. He sees himself as a witness to the Gospel, Christ’s message of good news for all humanity. Paul has been ridiculed and insulted yet he continues to preach the message of the gospel. He declares he has the same rights as any other human, but is willing to forego those rights in order to do everything he can to share the message of the gospel. He says he becomes a slave, giving over all rights to win over others to the gospel.
This is the early means by which Christianity was formed and spread. Followers did everything for others demonstrating love and compassion. Outsiders would look at the Christian community and see the love they had for one another, that they would even become slaves for one another and they would want the same for themselves. Christianity is not spread by words and worship services but by loving one another. We don’t see many Christians willing to do everything for others but it is the call of the Christian to love as though everyone is their family.
