1 Corinthians 6:5 – September 6, 2022

I say this to shame you. Can it be that there is not one among you wise enough to be able to settle a case between brothers? 1 Corinthians 6:5 NABRE

Paul writing to the community at Corinth is disappointed in how they are using secular courts to settle disputes among themselves. Paul addressing the community realizes followers of Christ will share in Christ rule over everything, even in the judging of angels. So Christians will sit in judgement with Christ over all secular people including those who sit in judgement in the secular courts. If Christians have this authority in Christ, why would they then take their disputes, conflicts between one another, to a secular court. Paul would rather they settle disputes among themselves. Jesus teaches to settle matters among each other; He says speak to the one who has offended to find a solution, if that does not work gather with two or three other members from the community and try to find a solution with the offended person and finally Jesus says, “If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.” (Matthew 18:17)

Following this advice Christians should judge one another with mercy. Christians do not act fairly, or take advantage of each other, but we are generous and loving. Secular courts are concerned with fairness and goodness for society. Christian’s set an example modeling God’s love, we are not fair, we are merciful. We treat one another with love knowing relationships are more important than being right or have possessions. We can only expand love with love, treating others in such a way as to model Christ. Don’t judge as the world judges, judge as though you are in authority with Christ.
