Ezekiel 1:28 – August 8, 2022

Just like the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day so was the appearance of brilliance that surrounded him. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speak. Ezekiel 1:28 NABRE

The priest Ezekiel is called by God to be a prophet through a vision that he has trouble describing in human terms. He does give certain aspects of the vision a human quality but other descriptions are more like animals and beasts. But Ezekiel is well aware it is the Lord coming to him in this vision. At the time of his calling Ezekiel has been exiled along with many other Judahites and therefore is the first prophet to be called outside Judah. He is a prophet during the same time period as Jeremiah and points the people back to their own infidelity as the reason for God allowing the Babylonian king to reign destruction and exile on them and their homeland. In Ezekiel’s vision the brilliance of God is more than he can look at and when realizing who is before him he falls and prostrates himself in honor as he hears a voice speak. Ezekiel knows he is seeing glory.

We aren’t as confident as Ezekiel when we have visions of God calling us, in fact we may have many doubts about our call. But God comes to us in a manner that we need so we will know God is with us. For Ezekiel this was a great vision; for many of us it might be an uneasiness, or a searching, or even a strong sense of spiritual insight. We search for God in our heart and we receive God when we are ready, with our confidence building as we journey closer to the brilliance and glory of God.

Can you describe your call from God? Are you still seeking a vision of God?
