Wisdom 18:8 – August 7, 2022

For by the same means with which you punished our adversaries, you glorified us whom you had summoned. Wisdom 18:8 NABRE

These passages from Wisdom are recounting the events of the Passover. The Hebrew people enslaved in Egypt are being freed by the action of God against the Pharaoh. God sends several plagues to convince the Pharaoh to release the Hebrew people until finally God sends the angel of death. Following specific instructions the people mark their door posts with the blood of an unblemished lamb sacrificed and eaten liturgically. Any door posts painted with the offering mark the angel will Passover. The other homes, unmarked, the homes of the Egyptians are visited by the angel of death and the life of the first born son in the home is taken. The view of Wisdom is the Egyptians are punished while the Hebrews are gloried, made holy by God.

Great power, like the power of Egypt at the time, can be reduced by God and the weak or unassuming can be made great. God often sees the humble, the weak as more aware of His presence and desiring His help in their lives. For the world the powerful are noticed but for God it is those quietly doing good that are the ones He lifts and glorifies.

Who do you notice in the world, the powerful or the unassuming? Are you aware of God’s work in your life?
