Ecclesiastes 2:22 – July 31, 2022

For what profit comes to mortals from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which they toil under the sun? Ecclesiastes 2:22 NABRE

A man searches to gain wisdom, but the search for wisdom serves no purpose, for the wise man’s lot remains unchanged, no matter what he learns. Speaking from personal experience about all that has happened under the sun, the writer claims no matter how much people work at investigating what makes the cosmos work, they will never discover anything new, never-the-less it is humanity’s nature to search for answers, God charges us to do so. Because the search for wisdom and the rejection of foolishness are such demanding tasks the writer wonders if happiness does not lie in material well-being and pleasure. But ultimately the writer gives examples of how it is impossible to attain happiness by following the path of human experience. He also wonders if descendants will take up his life’s search after he is gone, this could make him happy, they will appreciate all the work he has done. But in the end, He see this as vanity, the fate which comes to all, wise and fool. He concludes that all striving after things leads nowhere, everything good that happens in life ultimately comes from God. In the end we must accept an invitation to look to God for everything good and true.

The wisdom of the writer is indicating we need to keep our eyes focused on the creator, the one who makes all things, who provides virtue, truth, justice and perfections on everything that is good. We may search all day for wisdom or even try to achieve human success in material things but this will not lead to satisfaction. We can only feel completed when we have attained what is true, God the source of all true life.
