Isaiah 7:4 – July 12, 2022

and say to him: Take care you remain calm and do not fear; do not let your courage fail before these two stumps of smoldering brands, the blazing anger of Rezin and the Arameans and of the son of Remaliah—Isaiah 7:4 NABRE

King Ahaz of the southern Kingdom of Judah is facing pressure to join the coalition with the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Samarian’s against their political enemy the Assyrians. Ahaz is unsure what to do and is sent a message from God through the prophet Isaiah, God does not want Ahaz and his nation of Judah to put its faith in political alliances but to trust in God. The prophet’s message warns Judah that it should not try to take refuge in a political alliance, be it with Israel, Samaria or even Assyria, but they should put their trust in God, believing in His word. Isaiah concludes with the threat that if Ahaz and his supporters fail to listen, their downfall will soon follow.

We often believe we must resolve difficulties and take care of our own security ourselves. Having faith in God should encourage us to think of God as a part of any solution or security. God’s message to King Ahaz is that He is present and will save them. God is always available for salvation. But if we turn to our own recourse to solve problems or secure our future, we don’t allow God’s hand in our life to lift us up and support us. Thinking we are our own best resource may work, and we may feel secure or safe, but we are omitting a powerful advocate in God who can not only keep us safe and secure but can grant us an abundance in life. Trust God, call on God, depend on God. This should be a mantra always expressed in our mind.

Do you depend more on yourself or do you allow God’s providence in your life? Are you able to live day to day trusting God?

Thinking we are our own best resource may work, and we may feel secure or safe, but we are omitting a powerful advocate in God who can not only keep us safe and secure but can grant us an abundance in life. Click To Tweet
