Hosea began speaking about the love of God to Israel as the love of a spouse, but now he changes the relationship example and describes God’s love as that of a Father for his children, and God’s love is faithful though Israel is not. We see something of the verse from John 3:16, God so loved the world He sent His only Son. God loves His people more than a bridegroom loves His beloved and His love will be victorious over the worst infidelities, extending to the most precious gift of love, forgiveness. This oracle shows the full extent of God’s paternal affection. In this parental love the very thought of abandoning Israel breaks God’s heart. God’s love for His people and ultimately for every human being, exceeds human love, parental and spousal love are only partial reflections of God’s divine love. This prophecy by Hosea, in which we hear the verses from the lips of God, is rounded out by God’s forgiveness, He says He is God and it is only right He should forgive. God’s forgiveness comes before Israel’s conversion, God’s initial love and His reconciliation are initiatives of God, He does not love because of anything the people do, but because God is God and is fully love. God will do all He can to extend love to His people and the people only need to accept God’s love allowing us to live in His spirit and truth.
We don’t often understand how to love without our love being received by another, but Divine love, loving us constantly. We should look to God, accepting His love and then passing love on to others. Loving others is the business of the follower of God for no other reason than God loves us first, with the love of a perfect parent.
