Isaiah 66:13 – July 3, 2022

As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort. Isaiah 66:13 NABRE

The prophet Isaiah is closing out his chapter and speaking about the relationship between Israel and God. An analogy is used depicting Zion as a mother, although at one point it depicts God as comforting His people like a mother nursing her children. It is in Isaiah’s final verses where the attributes of a mother are often applied to God. We see God as Father, the origin over everything as well as transcendent authority; and He is at the same time goodness and loving care for all His children. God’s parental tenderness can be seen as the image of motherhood. God is immanent and there is an intimacy between Creator and creature. Through faith we are drawn into a parental relationship, we see our own parents and are able to project parental images on God, parents represent God on earth, though God never fails us. Human parents are fallible and can disfigure the face of fatherhood and motherhood, but God transcends the distinction between the sexes, neither man or woman or both man and woman; He is God. So, He also transcends parenthood, father and mother and therefore is the most perfect Father and Mother. He will comfort us and bring us to a life that transcends earthly suffering and anguish to a life of joy and peace. We only need to trust and have faith God is acting in our life.

As we are made in God’s image and God is fully parent, father and mother, we should have these qualities ourselves. If we are male or female, we must love as a father with a “provider” approach to life, and we must also be tender and teach tenderness. Being in the image of God means knowing when to project strength and meekness.

Do you approach love as mother and father? Are you able to receive God as mother and father?
