If you love me, you will keep my commandments. John 14:15 NABRE
Jesus makes an obvious comment about love, if you love someone you will do what they want you to do. We can see and hear stories of people who will do what they think is against their own interest for love. Love is such a powerful motivator it is the act we seek even when we are not aware we are seeking love. We don’t really understand love I believe, but we know it when we are in it. The love we experience comes with a feeling, we like being around the people who love us; they say nice things about us, they don’t criticize us and they accept all our foibles or weird synchronicities. So, when someone loves us we want to love them back which means we will accept their foibles, we say nice things about them and we don’t criticize them. This is Jesus’ point, when we love we want to do the things our lover wants us to do. Consequently, if we love Jesus, we will do what He wants us to do.
But we also know if someone loves us, they will not reject us if we don’t do what they want us to do. This is the approach we seem to have with Jesus; what He wants is too hard and so we depend on His love to not reject us, to not break the relationship or leave us. To be a Christian today isn’t doing what Jesus wants, but depending on Jesus’ mercy and love to forgive us for not doing what Jesus wants. Christians today are more judgmental then caring, more critical then loving, more finger pointing then serving. The downfall of Christianity is the seeking of power and not love. We need to get back to loving as Jesus asks, then we can be a church people will want to join.
Do you know what Jesus commands? Are you able to love Jesus as He asks?
