John 16:31 – May 30, 2022

Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now?” John 16:31 NABRE

Jesus sharing His final discourse with His disciples says to them He will be speaking to them plainly and they respond there is no need to question you as it is clear you know everything. They follow-up saying they now believe He has come from God. Jesus then asks do you believe me now? It is interesting how Jesus who is aware of everything asks what is no doubt a rhetorical question. The say they believe Him and He asks do you believe me now. It would almost seem like a moment of banter from Jesus to these friends of His, of course it is impossible to know. But Jesus must have had a sense of humor. He is generally a positive person though He meets all kinds of opposition and of course lots of people who are joyful, particularly those who have been healed. I believe Jesus is a person who contagiously shares joy and humor, aware of God’s plan for the world and the message of life eternal, He is not a person who carries a heaviness, except of course in His final moments of life. Therefore, when I hear Jesus say, do you believe me now, I hear a sarcastic teasing voice which is meant to be humorous.

However, though the disciples say they believe Jesus, in the end they still run and hide and think He has been stolen when the tomb is empty. When something is unbelievable, we don’t believe it. We are the same way, Jesus tells us not to worry about anything, God will provide, but we work hard to earn money, save and feel secure from the effort of our own hands. Believe Jesus when He tells you something, trust God and know all you need will be given you.

Do you believe the unbelievable Jesus has told us? How hard do you work to secure yourself?
