I am the bread of life. John 6:48 NABRE
Jesus declares He is the bread of life. This idea centers on the lifesaving bread the Hebrews received from God in the desert while exiting from Egypt on their way to the Promised Land. Jesus makes this connection for those listening, His message is a message of life. Jesus points to the manna in the desert, which provides life for each person day to day, but ultimately, they still die. Jesus is the bread from heaven which keeps people from dying. Jesus says, eat this bread and you will not die. This saying is such a mystery, how do we eat Jesus, from heaven? Catholics tie it directly to the wafer they consecrate at the Mass service becoming the body of Christ. We accept Jesus transforms into Christ at the resurrection, expanding beyond embodiment. If Jesus can become Christ, available to everyone everywhere, certainly He can transform into a wafer. But is this the meaning of Jesus declaration when saying we should eat the bread of life? Christ becomes so much, all things to all things and we must look more mystically at these words of Jesus. John calls Jesus the Word, the Logos, who is with God and is God. When we eat His words, we consume His message, we take in all He offers we are taking in the bread of life.
Life is everything. We are meant to love life, and live fully. A good way to live is to live loving, carrying that love into eternally. The image of eating bread as a means to consume Christ is good psychology, we are what we eat. Consume Christ, live fully and live eternally.
Do you bring all Christ into who you are and want to be? What is your image of the bread of life?
