The Jews murmured about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” John 6:41 NABRE
Jesus shares a long speech on being the bread of life that came down from heaven. Scholars compare this teaching to that of manna in the desert. The Hebrew people departed Egypt and spent years in the desert on their way to the Promised Land. They were hungry and grumbling and God hears them and promises bread and quail. We read, “Then the LORD said to Moses: I am going to rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not.” (Exodus 16:4) This bread from heaven saves the lives of the people and demonstrates God’s care for His people. The people in the desert are complaining and even wishing they were not freed from Egypt as they always had enough to eat while slaves. The bread on the ground every day is lifesaving, redeeming and God gives it freely, not because the people are worthy of God’s redemption, or feeding, but because God loves always; even when we do not love God as we should. Jesus shares that He is the bread from heaven, and the Jews who hear Him wonder how He can come from heaven, and not relating His message about bread to their ancestors. God can send us bread from anywhere, importance is God wanting us to have all we need to find our way to Him, even if we get separated, God still leaves us “bread crumbs” so that we may find our way back to Him.
Jesus’ message says anyone who comes to Him will not be rejected. Jesus wants us to know God wants us to choose God because God has already chosen us. Even if it means bringing us bread personally, God always takes care of you, it is a promise.
Do you trust the message God always chooses you? Is the bread important or the saving?
