Jesus is challenged by the religious leadership because they think Him a blasphemer for saying He is the Son of God, making Himself God. Jesus uses scripture to say it has been declared humans are gods; some declare themselves gods, others are given positions and roles where they seem like gods, and so in Psalm 82 God is declaring that they may be gods, but He is the final judge and God. God declares to these gods that He is the one who will destroy them for their misdeeds, their behavior undermines God’s willed order. Jesus cleverly uses this text in scripture to say if scripture can all humans god, then why can’t He who is sent as a messenger of God be called God as well? Jesus uses this language to defend Himself and challenge the leaders who are judging Him and who will eventually be judged by God as failing to do the will God orders.
Jesus does see in humanity our divine nature. We read about our divine nature in 2 Peter 1:4, it says we share in the divine nature, after escaping the corruption that is in the world. We have a quote from the early church that captures this beautifully, “God became man that man might become God.” We are made in the image and likeness of God and have God within us, in our matter, spirit an soul. God is so free He is desiring our discovery of our own divine nature. God wants us to be one with Him, to be gods, to be saved, which is a conscious experience of our unity with God. The kingdom of God brings us into God’s presence fully, with a powerful Spirit connection between us and God. Be a God, as God desires you to be.
