John 7:28 – April 1, 2022

So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said, “You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true.” John 7:28 NABRE

Jesus is teaching in the temple area during a Jewish feast. He is already concerned because the religious leaders think He has blasphemed and they are concerned about people following Him. So these leaders are trying to have Jesus arrested and tried. The people who see Jesus know He has been called the Messiah but they believe they know where He is from and so could not be the Messiah. Jesus confronts them with the message they think they know where He is from, but they do not know. Jesus says He has been sent and they do not know the One who has sent Him. This is a challenge, saying they do not know God, because they are led in the wrong direction following those who think more of their own power and image than to humbly follow God. It is often the doing that gets in the way of the being. As followers we are called to do for others, to care, serve and love; but first we must know why we are to do these things. Jesus healed, taught, loved and cared for others because He loves them and loves God. When we love, the doing comes from a place of compassion and empathy, not out of a desire to show God how good we are or as an evacuation plan for the next world. The kingdom of God is available now, to enter it we must love others and love God.

We don’t want Jesus to say about us we do know the One who sent Him because we are too busy following criteria that we think is God’s will. Get to know God, not by hearing others speak about God but by sitting and connecting with God yourself. Quietly listen, discover who you really are, love, then discover God who is the source of love.

Do you know God? Can you be with God?
