It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for the smallest part of a letter of the law to become invalid. Luke 16:17 NABRE
Jesus speaks about coming to bring a new kingdom which contains all that we know, including the law and (if we read Matthew 5:17) the prophets. This message can be interpreted as a saying about the law never being invalid. Some might look at the Law of Moses, particularly the Ten Commandments and hear Jesus declaring the law and the prophets will be in the kingdom of God. I like a message that ensures we keep them for our journey. Referring to the law and the prophets Jesus is referring to all who have come before Him, setting the ground work for His arrival. When Christians look at scripture we have a combination of smaller books combined into what is the bible. Books were written before and after Jesus, we use the term Old and New Testament. Unfortunately It only becomes natural to think the New Testament has superseded the Old Testament and ignore it. Jews call this supersessionism or replacement theology. It’s the wrong way to look at the books of scripture. All of scripture has the means to connect the entire story of God from the Garden of Eden to Jesus resurrection, ascension and the work of His disciples to spread His message. If we don’t understand the law and the prophets as Jesus is indicating, we will not completely understand the means to enter the kingdom of God.
I think Jesus wants us to always remember that God has been in the lives of His people from creation until today and missing any of the story can leave us short sighted and unable to complete our journey. It is best to be connected to the entire story, and see God constantly caring for His people.
Do you read the Hebrew Scriptures? Do you know the entire story of a chosen people?
