Mark 6:6 – March 2, 2022

But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. Mark 6:6 NABRE

Jesus teaches about prayer, giving and fasting. Students of a teacher seek to live austere lives and ask their teacher how to pray. Jesus teaches when you pray don’t pray so others see, rather pray privately and your Father who sees all will provide a response. When you give do so privately, and your Father who sees all things will respond. Fasting is denying yourself of certain things so that in those moments of wanting we become God aware, God dependent. Jesus teaches when we fast do it privately and don’t let others see in your appearance anything different about you and you Father who sees what is hidden will respond. Jesus doesn’t want us to do things for human appreciation or gratitude but know that God who knows all things, sees all things and hears all things will respond. If you receive human accolade then there is no reason for God to respond, you have already received payment. Of course human praise cannot compare to God’s appreciation, so we are better to be as private as possible in our praying, giving and fasting so that we allow space for God to repay.

Jesus repeats three times your Father who sees in secret or what is hidden will repay. Saying something three times is usually an indication of importance. We often hear Holy, Holy, Holy, which indicates Holiest. When Jesus says God sees in secret three times we know it is most important for God to watch over us. We pray to God for our needs, our desires; Jesus teaches God knows better than we do what we need or what is best for our lives. God knows us so well; our Creator, our Lover, and Power. It is why we are best to simply prayer, not my will but let your will be done God.

Do you know your importance to God? Are you aware God sees?
