Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who has touched my clothes?” Mark 5:30 NABRE
Marks tells the story of a woman who has been hemorrhaging for twelve years. She likely visited every physician, probably tried strange remedies and still nothing has cured her. She hears about Jesus and the many who have been cured through His intervention. She believes if she can touch his cloak she too will be healed. She follows close behind Jesus in the crowd working her way near him and touches Him. Jesus realizes someone has touch Him, who has great faith and is in need. Jesus is aware power has gone out of Him which cures the woman and He looks for her. Meanwhile His disciples are surprised He would notice one person touching Him when the entire crowd is crowding Him. The women comes forward realizing He is looking for her and tells Him the whole truth. Jesus responds her faith has saved her and sends her in peace cured of her affliction. Jesus’ response to people who believe is always their faith has saved them. Saving her means she will receive redemption and be face to face with God in His kingdom. With this as Jesus primary response, He addresses the affliction which is cured as well. For Jesus the most important aspect of life in the kingdom of God is believing. It is in believing which will bring the kingdom of God into a physical reality.
An interesting aspect of this miracle is how healing takes some of Jesus’ power. When we need a healing and Jesus responds He is giving us a part of Himself. The power that raises Jesus from the dead is given in the touching of Jesus. Today when we seek healing from Jesus we can expect to receive some of His power as well.
