Mark 5:7 – January 31, 2022

crying out in a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me!” Mark 5:7 NABRE

Jesus travels to an apparent pagan territory and encounters a man who is possessed by a demon. Jesus is prepared to summon the demon out of the man. The demon speaks out through the man asking what Jesus plans and begging to not torment him. The demon recognizes Jesus superior authority calling Him, the Son of the Most High God. Recognizing Jesus as the Son of God is common among the demons that spoke out when Jesus approaches. They always bow to Jesus authority and think by calling out His name or His relationship to God that they somehow can gain a relational equality with Him. We can read more from the demons who Jesus has come from and His relationship to God. Jesus will often refer to God as father, inviting us all to think of God as Father so this is often interpreted as a spiritual relationship, not necessarily their physical relationship. But demons make a definitive statement about Jesus being God’s Son and Jesus often commands them to be quiet on His identity. Jesus while the Son of God does not deem equality with God (Philippians 2:6) and so lived as humanly as possible. Jesus lives this humble life so that we may know how to live as He lives. His entire life is not dependent on His divinity, and so we are able to live exactly like Jesus.

Jesus’ humility should influence our own humility. We know Jesus is the Son of God because of these demons trying to curry favor. Sometimes this influences us to think we cannot live as Jesus lived, but we must have faith in God to know that all Jesus accomplished is available to us. Go and do what Jesus would do.

What is your view of Jesus as Son of God? Do you believe you are able to live completely as Jesus lived?
