And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” Luke 4:22 NABRE
Jesus attends His local synagogue. Asking for the scroll He reads a Scripture from Isaiah. The passage He reads calls for a year of jubilee. In a jubilee year the oppressed go free, captives receive liberty, the blind see and gladness comes to the poor. Completing the reading Jesus proclaims the Scripture passage is fulfilled in their hearing. Jesus is claiming He is a prophet, the anointed, essentially the Messiah. The people in the synagogue initially react with praise, amazed at Jesus gracious words. Something in His preaching has touched them and perhaps they believe they have heard from a prophet, and they are excited about the hope in the fulfillment of this passage. But then someone likely recognizes they know Him, He is Joseph’s Son. Joseph is well known in the town, a tradesman who would have served many and as a righteous man, respected. But Joseph is no preacher or prophet and though his ancestry is from the Davidic line, Joseph was too humble to be considered the father of the messiah. Therefore Jesus claims of prophecy are heresy. The claim of anointing raises the ire of the community, so much in fact they try to throw Him to His death.
Jesus local reputation is common for people who are known, especially in our own family. We may never be able to convince our family we are something spectacular. There is a moment when Jesus’ family thinks He is a little crazy and attempt to save Him. In family we may never be able to convince anyone we are greater than the child they have seen growing in their midst. We require great faith in ourselves to fulfill our God given mission.
Who are you in your family’s eyes? Do they expect greatness from you?
