Mark 3:11 – January 20, 2022

And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him and shout, “You are the Son of God.” Mark 3:11 NABRE

Mark begins to write about Jesus’ popularity with the people because of what He can do for them. Jesus Himself is not really the attraction but His ability to heal and cure. So many people come Jesus needs to go out in a boat on the sea so He is not crushed. Mark describes the people coming from Jewish areas as well as Gentile areas giving the impression the whole world is coming to Jesus. The people believe all they have to do is touch Jesus and they will be healed. Jesus does not reprimand them but simply allows the physical contact with Himself that makes the sick well. Among those who come for healing are people with unclean spirits, their ailment is due to the spirit. Often in the gospels it is a unclean spirit who recognizes Jesus as the Son of God. Often people hope by using someone’s proper name they will acquire some sort of mastery over the individual.  These unclean sprits announce Jesus as Son of God in the hopes it will render Him harmless. Their prostration speaks more of Jesus authority then their words. Jesus authority requires their falling to their knees as does His stern forbidding to publicize their supernatural knowledge. Jesus does not want people to know Him as other than human like them, His life is a testament to how to live as a human to improve the world.

We read in Scripture of good and bad spirits, and their influence. For the most part evil spirits effect the person through some sort of illness or evil deed. We can never know what others suffer, or how their life has been controlled. Give others the benefit of the doubt, and help when they need it.

Do you help those with spiritual struggles? Are you able to discern between a bad act and the person committing it?
