He said to them in reply, “Give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Are we to buy two hundred days’ wages worth of food and give it to them to eat?” Mark 6:37 NABRE
Jesus desires to be with his disciples in a secluded place, but people see them and follow, thousands end up in the secluded place Jesus has chosen. It becomes one of the biggest miracles of Jesus ministry, often known as the “Feeding of Five Thousand.” Jesus uses the gathering to teach people. At a certain point in the day the disciples suggest to Jesus to dismiss the crowd so they could go find food for themselves. Jesus however uses the moment as an opportunity to teach His disciples about the power of God when there is faith. Jesus hears the disciple’s suggestion to dismiss the crowd and tells them to feed the people themselves. But their response is not a response of faith they depend on human knowledge and know-how, saying it would take several hundred days wages to feed so many people, as if Jesus is expecting them to go somewhere and buy food to feed the people. Jesus has been teaching these men and even sent them out on a mission trip for them to teach and heal, and yet they do not think as God thinks but as man thinks. We have to appreciate how this could be frustrating to Jesus, but He doesn’t react to their lack of faith or poor thinking, He teaches them how He will feed those present, and it will be a lesson so significant that every gospel writer includes some version of this story in their writings.
Jesus has come to lead us to discover our own divinity, He teaches, what He does – we can do, if we have faith. Somehow the world convinces us we are not divine, we are not powerful through Christ in us. We must fight what becomes our inner critic.
Can you feed five thousand? How would you do it?
