Matthew 4:24 – January 3, 2022

His fame spread to all of Syria, and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases and racked with pain, those who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics, and he cured them. Matthew 4:24 NABRE

Matthew writes about Jesus’ early days in public ministry. John the Baptist is arrested by King Herod for speaking the truth and Jesus seems to understand this as an impetus for beginning His mission from God. Jesus grew up in the area of Northern Galilee and this is where He begins. He calls some men to be His disciples and then he goes around teaching in the synagogues. Most towns and villages have a place where the people would go for prayer. Jesus would use these places of welcome as a means to preach the gospel of the kingdom of God. Jesus wants to bring the kingdom to all people and He does so by speaking about it and inviting others to become a part of God’s kingdom. God wants all of us to be included in creating the kingdom here and now. Jesus also cures and heals every disease and illness among the people. This healing is what truly attracts people, those who want to be heled and those who want to see the healer. People come from great distances to see Him. Every type of sickness, disease, and demon possession is brought to Jesus and He heals them all. Matthew wants us to recognize Jesus made a profound and immediate impact on the world. No sooner did the Messiah step out of obscurity then the people come to Him in droves to hear His voice and receive His blessing. He preaches the kingdom of God and He relieves the suffering of many bringing God’s love to them.

We know of Jesus today because He became infamous through word and deed. He lived by His own words, we know Him by his fruit.

How did you learn about Jesus? Are you grateful for being introduced to Jesus?
