When he looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury Luke 21:1 NABRE
Jesus is in the temple complex and observing those who contribute to the temple treasury. He notices many who contribute and mention in particular the wealthy who contribute. His observation of them is they give from their surplus, requiring no sacrifice. They give what they can easily afford and not miss. Jesus makes this observation and shares this with His disciples wanting to point out to them a poor widow contributing all she has, she makes an offering greater than all others because she gives from her poverty. The message is about financial contribution but it can be about anything, giving time in service, using our talents in service and of course giving money. If we are like the wealthy our offering is not as meaningful. Perhaps if we are rich and can afford any contribution then maybe our offering should come in the form of time provided in service or using our skills to help Jesus’ message be propagated. It is unlikely there were billionaires in Jesus day but there is always a disparity between rich and poor.
We in the USA have benefited from a birthplace where money and resources are plentiful and though we have hungry, homeless and poor people they can survive just on what we throw out. We have never faced a nationwide poverty where we can’t find something to eat. I wonder how we would behave if we face that situation. I hear stories of the poor in India receiving a bowl of rice and sharing half with their neighbor. If we all shared even ten percent of what we have, everyone would have a home, food and two cars. Rob Bell read a bumper sticker, “It says, ‘God Bless America.’ Every time I see one, I think God has. God has blessed America.“
Are you wealthy by worldly standards? Do you give from your surplus?
