John 18:37 – November 21, 2021

So Pilate said to him, “Then you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” John 18:37 NABRE

Jesus is brought before Pilate and is asked questions. Pilate’s questions center on kingship and ruling, but Jesus can’t answer questions about kingship knowing worldly people have a different view of what it means to be a king then the heavenly understanding. Jesus is born to testify to truth, in fact Jesus is the truth (John 14:6), and His every word spoken and action taken is truth. Everyone who follows truth listens to Jesus’ voice and speaks truth themselves. It is impossible for Jesus not to speak and live truth because His is made truth. Jesus life is a testament to truth, even His death represents truth, not that He died but how he lived while being killed. We are taught not to kill and yet Jesus allows Himself to be put to death. People make exceptions to the truth, we allow killing in certain circumstances; just war theory, executions, self-defense all acceptable means of killing. Yet, watching Jesus we see none of these exceptions, Jesus dies so others will not die. Even when Peter pulls a sword to defend Jesus as He is being arrested, Jesus makes him stop.

Jesus does not deem Himself more important than anyone else, and would rather allow His own life be taken than allow another life to be destroyed. Even Jesus’ words are life giving not life ending. Jesus wants us all to live, no matter who we are or what we have done. Today truth seems to be dying, we have come to define our own version of truth, but Christians know if Jesus would not say or do a thing, then it is not the truth.

What is truth? Is any killing of another person okay?
