Luke 17:33 – November 12, 2021

Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it. Luke 17:33 NABRE

Jesus is teaching about life now and what life may be at the end times. He indicates when the end times come there is no reason to collect your belongings. He mentions Lot’s wife who had to look back at what would happen to Sodom leading to her destruction. Jesus teaches about a dichotomy between the values of the world; obtain and possess as much as possible and God’s values; loving and caring for as many people as possible. Jesus teaches we should take up our own cross each day, in other words we should face our burdens and find resurrection going through them. Jesus sums it up in this statement about preserving life and losing life. If we are working hard to do everything we can for the most comfortable life according to worldly standards, we are really working toward losing our life. We may be comfortable now, but we have wasted out time because our life can be taken at any moment and our prospects for a life of wholeness in the future is at risk. However, if we sacrifice our life today, we give and serve others, we follow the message of Jesus, we work to create the kingdom of God, we can look forward to a fully whole life in the future. We should not serve and care for others to have a great eternal life, we should do it to help create the kingdom of God, but by doing so we are also rewarded in the future.

We should live our life with a purity of intention, living our life more to please God than to please ourselves or others. It may mean we sacrifice more, a sacrifice which we demonstrate with our gestures how much we truly love God. Please God now, not our self and we gain life eternally.

Is sacrificing for others in your daily routine? How do you show God your love?
