Mark 12:43 – November 7, 2021

Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury.” Mark 12:43 NABRE

Jesus is watching the contributions to the temple and notices particularly a poor widow putting in a few small coins, practically worthless towards the temple contribution, but He is impressed with her sacrifice. The wealthy are giving from their surplus and this widow is giving all she has, her livelihood has gone into the temple donation. Since she is giving from her substance, her giving is worth more in the eyes of God, certainly more than those who sacrifice nothing for their contribution. Jesus makes a point of calling His disciples to understand the significance of her contribution. Being a window she likely does not have a man in her life which constricts her ability to earn money and makes her insignificant in the eyes of the community. But Jesus recognizes those the world calls insignificant and reveals their true significance. Her sacrifice mimics the generosity of God Himself. Like the widow most people reject God, yet God continues to reach out to us. The widow could stay home and no one would notice she is not present, but she chooses to reach out to God.

We can imagine with Jesus recognition something wonderful happens in her life, at least Jesus’ disciples will notice her and may even envy her. She has made an impression and though Scripture does not tell what happens with her we believe generosity to God will be rewarded one-hundred fold, likely she is a recipient of God’s generosity. We can never be more generous than God, so when we give; time, talent or treasure be sure to be so generous you are noticed by Jesus like this widow.
