Jesus begins to give the Twelve a share in His mission of healing and teaching. Jesus equips the Twelve to share in His ministry giving them the authority to drive out demons and cure diseases. He gives them power and authority so they may multiply His outreach and become ready for future missions. It is almost as if Jesus has a residency program where the Twelve are sent to live as Jesus and when they return have the opportunity to ask questions or at least have a better appreciation of what Jesus has been dealing with all along. All that Jesus has and does comes from the Father, He speaks often about the Father sending Him and giving Him the authority and power to teach and heal. Now Jesus extends this same sending to His disciples. Jesus will depend on them to spread the word and to speak to people about the kingdom of God. This has been God’s plan from the beginning, meet people one-on-one and inspire them to meet others.
We today are called to be sent, we are given authority and power but to use it requires faith. The Twelve are sent knowing that Jesus gave them what is needed, they trusted Jesus because they saw what He did, and heard what He said. We depend more on the knowledge passed down from the original Twelve, faith in knowing Jesus personally and faith in knowing Jesus will give us what we need to succeed in teaching and healing. We read Jesus sent the Twelve with nothing, He asks them to trust the people and places they go and when they are not welcome to move on and try again. We are asked to do the same in the same manner.
