When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Matthew 13:46 NABRE
Jesus again shares a parable, this time He is talking about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus illustrates that the kingdom is of such value that we should be willing to do anything to obtain it. As Jesus is speaking to His disciples, He honors them who gave up everything to follow Him immediately. Jesus uses the example of a pearl. A pearl is small but has great value and so if a merchant discovers a pearl but it is not in his possession he will sell all he has to obtain this valued item. We can think of him searching and discovering the pearl, he does all he can to purchase the rights or the property where the pearl is located. We can think of the merchant acting with urgency and immediacy as he does not want to lose the opportunity. We also see he sells everything, perhaps his own property, house, clothing, food, everything means everything. Then he purchases the pearl and is completely happy. Again, Jesus is telling this story equating the pearl to the kingdom of heaven. We should sell everything, give up everything so that we will obtain the kingdom of heaven.
Today we are more infected by culture than this “sell everything” proposition. We may think church is for Sunday and that attending helps us obtain the kingdom of heaven. At least we are not like others who don’t go to church. Maybe we are spiritual and don’t need church, we find ways to do good for others, we still have our property, house, clothing, food, but do we have the pearl? It is difficult today to live as Jesus describes, too many around us tell us we need to take care of ourselves and our family. Jesus tells us obtain the kingdom and God will take care of us and our family.
What would you sell to obtain the pearl? Must you think of others before abandoning everything?
