For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Matthew 10:20 NABRE
Jesus is sending His disciples out to have an impact on the people sharing the message of the gospels. Jesus has given them authority, asked them to completely trust God on the journey and now He tells them they will be opposed. Jesus is sending them out like sheep in the midst of wolves, an image of vulnerability and helplessness before fierce attackers. Jesus says they must be shrewd and survive and at the same time be as simple and pure. Being shrewd could lead the apostles to focus on surviving but they must keep their motives pure and the mission the priority, survival should never compromise integrity. They will be opposed by the people who will turn them over to the courts and synagogues and by governors and kings who will seek to diminish the message of Jesus. Despite all opposition and difficulty they should never worry what to say in response to this opposition and the leaders because God, the Almighty Father, will send His Spirit to speak through them. The Spirit will become their thoughts, voice and their words will be precisely what is needed in the face of criticism. Though all of society will hate these apostles because of Jesus they should never fear, their work and words will be complete throughout Israel. Every town will have heard from them and Jesus’ message will slowly spread over the people.
We often think and ruminate on what it is we will say before an authority or in a situation where we believe our words will make a difference. Jesus tells us depend on the Spirit, open yourself up to be an instrument of God and let the Spirit speak.
Do you ask for help when you have something important to say? Has the Spirit spoken through you?
