Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. Matthew 10:32 NABRE
Though Jesus has spoken to His disciples about the opposition they will receive, here He further explains the damage that can be done if they don’t stay strong in the face of opposition. Jesus has been challenged, leaders have said that they believe His strength to heal and work miracles comes from “Beelzebul, the prince of demons” (Matthew 12:24). If this is what they say about the master what will they say about His disciples. Jesus challenges them to stay strong, the worst anyone on earth can do to us is kill our body, they cannot destroy our soul. It is better we save our soul than preserve our physical life. We should therefore respect God who can destroy body and soul and standup to the opposition of others. Jesus goes on to say everyone who acknowledges Him before others, Jesus will acknowledge before His heavenly Father, and whoever denies Him before others, He will deny before His heavenly Father. The message is straight forward, better to die with God’s grace then to live denying God’s will for our lives. Many believe this is a judgement day message, after we die we will be acknowledged or denied by Jesus based on how we lived.
It takes courage to stand up to opposition when life can be on the line. We should recall, faith tells us death is sleeping and we will wake up to a life more glorious if we stand with God. If we fall asleep denying God we will wake up to a life in the garbage dump. In a culture looking for instant affirmation, this is a difficult teaching to become rooted in our heart, we should try to think long term and live a life with strength and discipline.
Do you always acknowledge Jesus, including doing what is right? Have you recognized your silence about Jesus in the face of challenges? It takes courage to stand up to opposition when life can be on the line. We should recall, faith tells us death is sleeping and we will wake up to a life more glorious if we stand with God. Click To Tweet
