Matthew 10:9 – July 8, 2021

Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts; Matthew 10:9 NABRE

In sending out His disciples Jesus gives them instruction. He has prohibitions for them, He tells them to take no money with them (gold, silver or copper), nor any basic travel items such as as a knapsack, or an extra shirt. He even tells them to leave behind sandals or a walking stick, both used for support and defense against wild animals and robbers. To go without these basic necessities is a sign of the disciples placing all their trust in God and renouncing comfort and wealth, walking barefoot along the rocky road of Palestine. Additionally they are not to receive payment for their preaching and healing. They will receive hardships in their ministry, as foretold by Jesus (Matthew 8:20-22). But traveling in such simplicity they will be prophetic, a sign witnessing to Jesus’ teaching the heavenly Father will provide for those who seek the kingdom and trust in Him.

We are called to live more simply, and less wealthy. God’s plan depends on us sharing with one another; there is no hunger because we share, no one is thirsty because we share, nakedness is eliminated because we share, no one is lonely because we visit, suffering is lessened because we help carry one another’s burden. God’s plan calls for us to realize we are united in love, and therefore seek to help and raise one another up. A simple life allows us to share more and live happier as well as being prophetic and a sign of Jesus’ message. When we are all united in sharing and caring we are living in the Kingdom of God.

Do you live as simply as possible? Are you helped by others who share and care?
