Matthew ends His gospel with Jesus command to go and make disciples of all nations. Now, Jesus having completed His earthly mission, tells His disciples to expand the message beyond their own community, to all people, everywhere. Jesus’ desires His entire message to be shared with all who hear the disciples. We can admit the first missionaries sent out by Jesus did a pretty good job getting the message out, especially since anyone today can pick up the gospels and read of the life, message and events of Jesus. Jesus also tells His disciples He is with them always. Now after His resurrection He can be more present, fully present, not just to one but to all. This is accomplished through the Spirit, and Christ is available universally, Christ is in the Church, Christ is in each disciple, Christ is in the poor and the rich, the weak and the strong, the foolish and the wise, Christ is everywhere. If we trust, if we have faith we can call on Christ and through His power we can accomplish the will of God.
Each of us is challenged to participate in the evangelization of those who do not know God, we are asked to share the message of Jesus. We are called to witness through our words, and deeds. Wherever we are, we are challenged to be a disciple first. The gospel is meant to give shape and direction to our entire life, as believers we must let the gospels inform our family life, our relationships, our interaction as a citizen, it should lead our educational and economic systems. Living as a Christian should not be a weekly task but a lifestyle demonstrating Christ is always present.
