Jesus prays for His disciples and for those who will come to believe because of the word they share, we are included. Jesus’ relationship with the Father is so connected He continually speaks about unity, He is in the Father and the Father is in Him. We are invited to this communion, Jesus calls it a love with which the Father has loved Him. Jesus asks the Father to extend that same love to those who come to believe, to extend their communion of love to a wider community, to all who are Jesus’ disciples and come to believe in Him. Jesus knows God is love and that the communion of love can be in His disciples and followers, a love that includes Jesus in us. I think of it as a flame, if we see the Father as a flame the Son as a flame and we too are a flame, when they are joined it is one flame, the individual flames blurred. It could be why the Holy Spirit is represented in the Acts of the Apostles as tongues of fire (Acts 2:4.) This is the indistinguishable communion and love Jesus desires for us with the Father and Himself.
Jesus has made the Name known to us and will continue to make it known. The name we learned from Jesus of the great “I AM,” is Father. Jesus is the only who tells us of God as “loving daddy” who desires our best, a life of joy and peace. We know Our Father because Jesus tells us about Him, His name, and His love for us. Jesus wants us to be in communion with Our Father, to love deeply and know we are deeply loved. The fire of love burns in each, our flame fueled by God’s love.
