In His prayer to the Father, Jesus specifies what it means to have eternal life. To have eternal life is to know the Father, the only true God and to know the one He sent, Jesus Christ. To have eternal life is to have a life with God, now and in the future. Eternal life is filled with joy, beauty and peace. Jesus doesn’t say we must pray a certain amount of prayers, give a certain amount of money, do a certain amount of good deeds, to have eternal life, we must know God and know His Son, Jesus Christ. To know someone in biblical language is much more than knowing their name and address, it is having a relationship and intimacy with them. We can only know the Father if we listen to Son who reveals the Father to us. We can only know the Son if we listen to His message and connect with Him through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The divine has a communion of relationship between the Father, Son and Spirit, and we are invited to join. If we choose to join we will have eternal life, and to join we must get to know the Father and the Son and by implication the Spirit.
We have this message that eternal life lies in relationship and knowledge of the divine. We know God from the Son and we know that God sent the Son to teach about the Father. The Father wants us to know the Son because the Son reveals God to the world. In knowing God we bring the divine into our heart, we accept the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and we live this communion of life; we cannot die. Be kind, love others, share what you have, these are good things, but know God and Jesus so you may live.
