Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.” John 6:26 NABRE
Jesus has just fed the five thousand plus people with the loaves and fishes. He leaves the plain in which they ate and travels across the sea. Many, if not all, of the people follow him, looking for Jesus. But, He tells it to them like it is, they look for Him because they had a filling meal. He isn’t disappointed, instead He uses it to teach, using their selfish nature to share with them there is more to life than getting a good meal. If they truly follow Him they will be filled constantly. Later in the teaching Jesus says some things that makes all these people turn away from Him. They were never committed. God can give us everything we ask for, respond to all our prayers positively and we most likely will be attentive followers of God. But, we would not be devoted, transformed, satisfied followers. Following to get what we want is not following God, it is following out own stomach’s, ego’s, and desires. This is not following God, it is following ourselves. God can make us happy but won’t artificially through feeding our desires. God gives us purpose, drive and leads us to love. God knows satisfying our desires might make us happy, but will not lead to long term pleasure. We must live for something bigger than ourselves. We must fulfill a mission ordained by God to be filled.
How many people are satisfied with everything they have, isn’t there always a desire for more? People who are fulfilled spend their lives doing for others, serving others, all in the name of God. If we want the most life has to offer, do the most for others.
