John 3:19 – April 14, 2021

And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. John 3:19 NABRE

Jesus is teaching about judgement, comparing darkness and light. The world was in darkness, the symbol for sin; separated from God. John writes in the beginning was the Word, who came to bring life, which is light, shinning in the darkness, never overcome by darkness (John 1:1-5). This light is the splendor of God, with instruction on life, and John consistently presents Jesus as “the light of the world.”  Jesus comes into the world shining light in darkness, pushing light into the darkness. But, people are drawn to sinfulness, reluctant to break from our evil ways, we are attached, or even addicted to evil acts. Sin is attractive because is substitutes the immediate for the ultimate, pleasure for fulfillment, things for people, images for intimacy and experience for exclusivity. Sin undermines the light by separating us from it and substituting something else in its place. We seek easy pleasure, more toys, pornography, free encounters with others, all of which requires privacy, behavior when we are alone, acted out in the dark, always requiring secrecy from those who know us best. We hide our sinfulness because in the light we are judged immoral. Even when dragged into the light we find ways to justify our sinfulness, blaming others, acting like a victim.

If we want peace, we must walk in the light. Though we are drawn to immediate pleasure, true fulfillment comes walking a path in the light. When we are not proud of what we are doing, it indicates we are not in the light. Only in the light, can we have ultimate satisfaction, fulfillment, love, and intimate exclusive relationships.

What are your areas of sinfulness? Do you have someone who knows all you do?
