John 8:29 – March 23, 2021

The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him. John 8:29 NABRE

Jesus often speaks about his relationship with His Father. Jesus declares a divine identity, His relationship as the One sent to deliver us from sin and death that His cross and resurrection accomplishes. Jesus tells the Pharisees, whom He is addressing, He is going away, but they don’t really understand all He is telling them. Honestly we read this today with all the events having occurred and we have difficulty understanding Jesus’ message. But what we read about Jesus not being left alone is truly a beautiful message. Jesus who is sent by the Father knows the Father is always with Him. He is never left alone. Jesus says He is always obedient to the Father, though this is not the reason the Father remains with Him. The Father is love and therefore seeks to be with Jesus and in fact with all His children.

We can say the same thing as Jesus, God never leaves us alone. I am not sure we understand completely, we sometimes act in a way that we think we are very alone. But God is always present in our lives and always wants us to know He is with us. We may forget or not recognize God’s presence, but it does not change the reality of God’s presence. God doesn’t take breaks or fall asleep, He is present 24/7 as we sometimes hear. Trusting this will allow us to call on God more often, seeking help and responding in thanks for His presence. We too should always do what is pleasing, but it is not a condition of God’s presence in our life. God is present because that is where He wants to be. Jesus refers to Himself as I AM, God’s declared name to Moses. We should always think, I AM with you.

Do you comprehend God is always present with YOU? Are you always trying to please God?
