Now since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, Hebrews 2:14 NABRE
In the letter to the Hebrews Jesus is shown as the exalted firstborn Son of God, humbling Himself to a status lower than angels. The quoted verse wants to create a solidarity between the Son and humanity. It describes Christ’s humanity in graphic terms, blood and flesh, an expression of human nature which accents the weakness and the physical kinship that human beings share by common descent. The children, the brothers and sisters whom Christ sanctifies, share a human nature that is subject to suffering and mortality, which Jesus likewise shared. This sharing points to the event of Jesus’ incarnation which happened at the right time in history. The Son of God became one with us in the most radical way possible, He became a blood relative. This passage is asserting Christ became human so He could die. Jesus accomplishes through His death the destruction of the one who had the power of death, the devil. Jesus through His death, conquerors death. The devil has the power of death by convincing our first parents to sin, which led to death and thereby gained him a certain dominion over human beings. Jesus’ crucifixion is the ultimate confrontation with the devil, in which Jesus defeats him once and for all. Jesus doesn’t escape death, He experiences it and destroys it from within.
We are meant to look at Christ’s solidarity with humanity as the greatest act of love possible. God dares to lower Himself becoming human, a slave to the physical like each of us. In His incarnation He leads the way to the destruction of death, making eternal life possible for all who choose Him.
Do you choose Christ? Can you understand the love God has for each of us?
