Isaiah 1:17 – January 5, 2021

learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow. Isaiah 1:17 NABRE

Isaiah here provides a central message from God concerning the chosen people. He has chastised the people from the opening verses of this first chapter; declaring they are not worthy of God, they have done wrong, they are a sinful nation and God is calling them to conversion. Finally the people are called to make themselves clean, remove all evil doings and learn to do good. In order to lead the sort of lives God wants for us we need to be schooled properly. Moral understanding is not always self-evident nor clear to all, we must learn to do good through sound teaching, and doctrine. Sound doctrine includes the messages of Jesus in the gospel. Beyond learning the word of Jesus we must also practice virtue, day by day, consistently, in whatever circumstances we find ourselves. We see virtues derived from supernatural encouragement. We have been taught virtues from biblical reference; faith, hope, charity, fortitude, justice, prudence and temperance. Practicing these virtues can provide us with constant encouragement to behave in a moral manner. But we cannot simply want to have these virtues, we must learn how to practice them, we must learn to do good. We should make a habit of exercising each virtue, for our good is proved by deeds. Our love for God is, “not in word or speech but in deed and truth.” (1 John 3:18).

Make your day about action not reaction. Take on a bold commitment to practice virtues, to learn to do good and not leave what happens to us to chance. We can be good, learn good and witness to the good, but it requires to learn how, through concerted effort and daily exercise.

Are you led by reaction daily? Do you have the discipline to learn good?
