1 John 2:27 – January 2, 2021

As for you, the anointing that you received from him remains in you, so that you do not need anyone to teach you. But his anointing teaches you about everything and is true and not false; just as it taught you, remain in him. 1 John 2:27 NABRE

John writes to his community about lies and antichrists, something Jesus spoke about in a final discourse, those who would come as false Christ’s, claiming they are anointed but in fact they are deceiving people. John is warning the community to not be deceived. In fact he tells them they already have a true anointing. The anointing they received is the gift of the Holy Spirit itself, who comes to live and act in our hearts. This anointing is like the anointing Jesus received when He was baptized in the Jordan, and the Holy Spirit came upon Him. Our anointing is real. For the believers in the early church as a symbol after baptism were anointed with oil signifying the gift of the Holy Spirit in their hearts. Certain church’s today still use oil in the ceremony receiving the Holy Spirit, an anointing. John tells the community that the Spirit lives in them (and us) and the Spirit is our true and fundamental teacher, primarily reminding the faithful of what they have and what they already know. John tells them they do not need anyone to teach them; God is their primary teacher of faith, through His word and His Spirit. John is not saying human teachers should be ignored, but to test whatever we are taught through the indwelling Spirit. The Spirit reveals what is true so we can ignore the false teacher, those claiming to be the Christ. By the anointing of God’s Spirit we are ready to repel the false teaching that might assault us and we are to retain our communion with the One who is eternal life, we are to remain in Him.

As Paul said, test everything!

Do you test everything? Have you met false Christ’s?

By the anointing of God's Spirit we are ready to repel the false teaching that might assault us and we are to retain our communion with the One who is eternal life, we are to remain in Him. Click To Tweet
