Luke 2:21 – December 26, 2020

When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. Luke 2:21 NABRE

Mary and Joseph are faithful observers of the law. Therefore, their child is circumcised when eight days are completed. He is named Jesus in obedience of the words of the angel. Jesus has left Bethlehem and is taken to the temple in Jerusalem. He will make many trips to Jerusalem and the temple throughout His life, usually for Passover. We will hear many stories of Jesus in the temple. Luke in telling the story of Jesus circumcision includes the Purification Ritual, which would have been for Mary, his mother, making her ritually clean for temple worship again. The purification takes place forty days after the birth. It is a little confusing, are these two events occurring at the same time or are they separate trips to the temple, perhaps Luke himself is unsure. The circumcision is required to take place eight days after the birth according to the Genesis 17:9-14. The circumcision is a sign of the covenant the Lord made with Abraham, where God promised Abraham he would be father of many nations. It is in this moment that God gives Abraham his name. God tells Abraham every male is to be circumcised and any who are not are to be cut off from the people, they are breaking the covenant. Jesus is circumcised and made a member of the community. Jesus’ life totally attests to His humanity, living by the law and following the way of His people. God so loved the world He will do anything to show us what His loves means.

Many groups ritualize membership, God does what is necessary to be part of the group. We all desire belonging; to a family, a tribe, a country, therefore we must behave in a way good for the entire tribe. God teaches us this!

Where do you belong? How do you show belonging?
